Atlanta Still Draws Aces

fancy pants cup cake

One doesnt have to be a good writer to blog, as should be obvious.  I could write a long load of hooey here but I much prefer making a video. A short look around and you’ll  get that.

Thankfully the Atlanta I love has many other fans and we are blessed (a word big in the ATL) to have world class residents that write in the bigs.  One such transplant has shared his perspective in words that many of us feel but few of us could write.

Join me now and enjoy this piece by fancy pants writer Jon Fasman as he tells his Atlanta story.

[note to self]  follow up with this guy in 2 more years and ask for an update.

Atlanta Living Can Be A Walk In The Park

Atlanta Park is Hidden Gem

I’ll say it. Atlanta can be doggone irritating sometimes, with all the traffic, the heat, the challenges of making through the day etc. That’s why I was overjoyed to find a fabulous park with natural awesomeness which I recently had all to myself. Complete with a sandy beach [not a big lie] and a suspension bridge, this was a real treat.

The biggest thrill was the fact that this is very near my home. It is within a few feet of very busy and well known Cheshire Bridge Road, right in one of Atlanta’s ‘best’ neighborhoods. The trail is simple to navigate and the quiet setting will have you thinking Appalachian Trail in no time.

Have a walk with me through this simple flip video. This is one of those spur-of-the-moment things so it’s a but rough, but you’ll see what I mean.

The park is one of many of the City’s assets and was recently improved in part with some help from Atlanta’s great benefactor via the Arthur Blank Foundation. (Thank’s Art! You’da man!)

Surrounded by the back yards of many lovely homes, the park is accessible from one little trail between two homes on a quiet city street. Those that don’t live in the area aren’t likely to know of it. Who wants strangers poking around in the woods behind their homes? If I lived there I’d likely want to keep folks like me out of there too ;-)

Maybe you’re not into creeks and trees and rocks and bugs and poison ivy and such. No problem, just search through this list and find a park that has the kinds of things that trip your trigger. On the other end of the spectrum the skateboard gangs have a park to keep them occupied too.

Now, take a hike, and recharge.

Wait just a minute. You want to know where this place is, right? Well I guess it’s OK to tell, but please keep it on the down-low. If you can get out there during the week day you may find you have it all to your self. If you take your mountain bike be careful not to run me over as the visibility out here is sometimes only a few feet. Also don’t be a litterbug, and field strip those cigs, you poser ;-) Here’s your map.

Atlanta BeltLine Skate Park Opens With Big Fanfare

Old Fourth Ward Atlanta Park Opens

The newest ‘world-class’ skate park opened this weekend in Atlanta’s historic Old Fourth Ward, adjacent to the developing Atlanta BeltLine. See the videos here for a first hand look.

This park features 15,000 square feet of bowls, rails, walls, and bumps that keeps the gang stoked for a visit, and away from the Po-Po! ;-) Bring it on.

There’s a huge grassy field for play and a well equiped play zone for the smaller kids too. The 17 acres of green space is impressive. Park hours and rules are a bit vague at the moment but Kwanza Hall says it’s open till 11pm. What are you waiting for?

Tony Hawk made an unannounced walk-on visit to help christen the park on Saturday June 11th. He also was helpful in the parks design. Last year the Tony Hawk Foundation awarded the park a $25,000 gift to help development. Awesome!

Who knows where the next truly sick skater will show. The odds of some Atlanta talent making the scene just went through the roof. This park is going to really raise the bar!

The park is a little off the beaten path, as it should be, but you’ll find it easily by following the big WSB-TV tower!

Atlanta Loves Great Street Food

There’s lots of ‘common ground’ in Atlanta these days where everyone can come together for a good time and have some fun. The Food Truck trend is a great new wave that is making friends and spreading smiles to many around town.

The food trucks very diverse offerings suit a very diverse people and are best enjoyed where a group of them can corral into a space and offer what the people want. A little of everything! These happenings around town are becoming more frequent and the Friday events are tops.

Food Truck Friday is currrently underway at Atlantic Station and Lenox. Take your pick as both offer a varying mix of trucks and treats and are sure to please.

This past Friday (June 3) was the first for the Shops around Lenox location but the event was well attended with plenty of delicious variety. They start rather slow at 11am but by noon the crowd is growing fast. The lines are often long but as everyone will attest it is sooo worth it. Just ask your neighbor if you’re unsure because they will usually be glad to share advice on the best dishes.

Eating amazing food from a truck is affordable with most dishes priced from $2 to $7. My personal preference is to sample 3-4 items from different trucks and finish it off with cupcakes, or pops, or ice cream.

Food trucks have big followings and are definitely tied to social media for their success. Follow the trucks on twitter and/or facebook and you’ll be able to know when and where to connect. The Atlanta Food Truck Coalition is the mothership for this group and can be your best resource.

We have begun a twitter list for the vendors and players, and hope you will suggest any that we need to add.

Thursdays in Midtown and Fridays in Lenox & Atlantic Station will get you started, but look for these vendors at events and parking lots, and street corners each and every day.
